Aluminum vs. Steel Fences
Two black ornamental fences that look alike from the street but behave differently.

Aluminum is lighter, can't rust, costs less and racks easily on slopes, which makes it ideal for most residential yards and pools. Steel is heavier, stronger and more rigid, which makes it the better choice for driveway gates, security fencing and estate fences, but it needs touch-ups where coating chips.

Our typical recommendation
- Back yards and pools: aluminum
- Driveway gates: steel
- Commercial security: steel or commercial-grade aluminum
- Historic front fences: either, built to the approved design
Real-world examples
- A Myers Park colonial: aluminum along the side yards and around the pool, steel for the front entry gate and driveway gate
- A Steele Creek subdivision: residential aluminum throughout, per HOA standards
- A warehouse near Uptown: steel ornamental fence with a cantilever gate
- A greenway lot in south Charlotte: aluminum that racks with the slope
Maintenance differences
Aluminum needs occasional washing. Steel needs the same plus inspection for chips at hinges, latches and where mowers or trimmers hit the bottom rail. Touch up chips promptly.
Gate automation
Heavy driveway gates with openers benefit from steel’s rigidity. Light aluminum gates can be automated with the right operator.
Questions Charlotte homeowners ask
Can I mix them?
Yes. Many homes use aluminum for the yard and steel for driveway gates or front entries.
