Vinyl Fence Installation
Low-maintenance vinyl privacy and picket fences, a favorite of Charlotte HOAs and busy homeowners.

Vinyl (PVC) fences don't rot, splinter or need stain, which makes them popular in Charlotte subdivisions. They need a wash a couple of times a year, especially after spring pollen and in shady yards where mildew grows. Quality vinyl uses thicker profiles and reinforced rails so panels don't sag in summer heat.

Styles
- Solid privacy: 6-foot tongue-and-groove panels; the most common in Steele Creek, Berewick and other newer subdivisions
- Semi-privacy: spaced pickets or lattice tops for airflow and a lighter look
- Picket: 3- to 4-foot front-yard fences
- Colors and textures: white, tan, gray and wood-grain textures
Why people choose vinyl in Charlotte
- No staining or painting
- Won’t rot in damp clay or shady yards
- Uniform look many HOAs prefer
- Easy to clean
What to know before you buy
Not all vinyl is equal. Thicker profiles, aluminum-reinforced bottom rails and good routing at the posts make a big difference.
Pollen season shows. Charlotte’s spring pollen leaves a yellow-green film, especially on white. Plan an April rinse. See Cleaning pollen off your fence.
Shade breeds mildew. On the north side or under oaks, expect some green film. See Mildew on vinyl fences.
Slopes need planning. Vinyl panels are rigid, so hilly yards are usually stepped. See Fencing a sloped yard.
Installation
Posts are set in concrete below the frost line. In red clay we bell the bottom of the hole slightly for extra hold. Gates get aluminum-reinforced frames and self-closing hinges if they’re part of a pool barrier.
Compare it with wood in Vinyl vs. wood in Charlotte.
Questions Charlotte homeowners ask
Does vinyl fencing hold up in Charlotte heat?
Quality vinyl does. Cheaper, thin-wall products can sag or wave in heat. Ask about wall thickness, rail reinforcement and warranty terms.
How do I clean pollen and mildew off vinyl?
A garden hose, a soft brush and mild soap handle most of it. For mildew, use a vinyl-safe cleaner. Avoid pressure washers set too high and harsh solvents.
Can a falling limb break vinyl?
Yes. A heavy limb can crack a panel or rail. The upside is individual pieces can usually be replaced.
