Driveway Gates

Swing and sliding driveway gates in steel, aluminum and wood, from estate entries to modern sliders.

Driveway Gates in Charlotte, NC
Short answer

The right driveway gate depends on space and slope. Swing gates need clear room to open and a fairly level arc. Sliding gates need a straight run of space beside the opening equal to the gate width. Steel is best for automation, aluminum is lighter and rust-free, and wood gives a warm, private look.

Gate styles

  • Estate double swing gates in steel with brick piers, common in Eastover and Myers Park
  • Modern horizontal sliders in black aluminum, popular in newer custom homes
  • Wood privacy gates with steel frames for rear driveways and alleys
  • Farm and ranch gates for rural lots in Mint Hill and northwest Charlotte

Planning points

  • Set the gate back. A car waiting for a gate shouldn’t stick into the sidewalk or street.
  • Grade. Uphill swing arcs need a different hinge setup or a slider.
  • Width. Plan 12 to 16 feet for most residential driveways, wider for trucks or trailers.
  • Pedestrian gate. A separate walk gate saves wear on the main gate.
  • Corner lots. Keep sight triangles clear. See Corner lots and sight triangles.

Automation

Questions Charlotte homeowners ask

Swing or sliding gate?

Swing gates are simpler and classic but need clearance and a level arc. Sliding gates work on short or uphill driveways and in tight spaces with room alongside.

Can I add an opener later?

Yes, if the gate and posts are built for it. Plan conduit and post size from day one.

Do I need approval for a driveway gate?

Check HOA rules and, in historic districts, the Historic District Commission. Gates near city streets may need a CDOT Fence and Wall Certificate, and they shouldn’t block sight lines.
