How Deep Should Fence Posts Be in Charlotte Clay?

Post depth, concrete and drainage for Charlotte's dense red Piedmont clay.

How Deep Should Fence Posts Be in Charlotte Clay? in Charlotte, NC
Short answer

A common rule of thumb is to bury about one-third of a post's above-ground height, so a 6-foot fence typically gets posts around 2 to 3 feet deep, always below Charlotte's frost depth (generally 12 inches here). In red clay, crown the concrete so water runs away, and use ground-contact rated posts.

Charlotte’s red clay

The Piedmont’s red clay is dense and sticky when wet, hard as brick when dry. It holds a post firmly once set but is slow to dig and stains everything.

Our approach

  • Depth: generally a third of the above-grade height, deeper for gates and tall fences
  • Below frost depth: at least the local frost depth
  • Hole shape: slightly belled at the bottom
  • Concrete crown: sloped away from the post at the surface
  • Ground-contact posts
  • Gate posts: bigger and deeper

Rock

Some Mecklenburg lots hit rock. We adjust depth, core-drill when needed or move a post a few inches.

Spoil and cleanup

We put dug clay on tarps, haul away extra and keep driveways clean.

Questions Charlotte homeowners ask

Is concrete always best?

For most wood and vinyl fences in Charlotte, yes. Gravel can help drainage in some soils, but clay drains poorly around it.

Why does clay rot posts?

Dense clay holds water against the wood after rain. Ground-contact treatment and drainage at the surface help.
