Do Hot Tubs Need a Fence in Charlotte?
When a spa needs a barrier, how safety covers factor in, and privacy screen ideas.

Under the residential pool barrier provisions used in North Carolina, a spa or hot tub with a lockable safety cover meeting the applicable standard is generally exempt from the barrier requirement. Without such a cover, it may need a barrier like a pool. Confirm with your permit reviewer, and consider a privacy screen either way.

Privacy screen ideas

- A pergola with a slatted roof
- Composite panels around the spa pad
Safety
Locks on covers, gates on surrounding fences and keeping steps away from edges all help.

Placement ideas
- On a deck, with railings and a screen on the neighbor side
- On a pad next to a patio, enclosed by horizontal cedar panels
- Under a pergola with a slatted roof for overhead privacy from two-story neighbors
- Inside a fenced yard with a locking gate
Electrical and access
Hot tubs need dedicated electrical circuits and service access. Keep a removable panel or gate near equipment. Tell us where buried lines run so we don’t dig into them; 811 won’t mark private lines.
Privacy from above
Many Charlotte homeowners want hot tub privacy from second-story windows next door. A pergola or a screen close to the tub works better than a taller perimeter fence.
Safety reminders
Keep the cover locked when not in use, keep steps away from the edge and keep the tub inside a fenced yard with a self-closing gate if children live nearby.
