Which Side of the Fence Faces the Neighbor?
Whether Charlotte requires the good side out, and fence styles that make the question moot.

Charlotte and North Carolina don't have a general rule requiring a fence's finished side to face the neighbor or street. Many HOAs do require it, and it's the common courtesy. If you want the finished side too, choose a two-sided style like shadowbox, board-on-board with a cap, or vinyl, which looks the same on both sides.

Talk first
A quick conversation before building prevents most disputes: share the style, the line, the height, the finished side and the schedule. If you’re splitting the cost, put it in writing. See Sharing fence costs.
Why it’s customary
Putting posts and rails on your side gives neighbors and the street the clean face. It also makes your side easier to attach things to, like gate hardware, planters and lighting.
HOA requirements
Many Charlotte HOAs specify that the finished side faces out toward neighbors, streets and common areas. Some also require a consistent style across the community.
Maintenance on both sides
Whichever side faces out, you’re responsible for maintaining the fence you own. If the outside faces a neighbor, you’ll need their cooperation to stain or repair it. A friendly conversation upfront makes that easier.
Shared fences
If neighbors share the cost, agree on which side faces where, or choose a two-sided style.
Questions Charlotte homeowners ask
Why put the posts on my side?
Rails and posts on the inside give the street and neighbors the finished face, and it’s what most HOAs expect.
Can I stain my neighbor's side?
Only with their permission.
