Can My Neighbor Share the Cost of a Fence?
How Charlotte neighbors usually split fence costs, and what the agreement should cover.

North Carolina doesn't have a general law that requires residential neighbors to split the cost of a boundary fence. Sharing is voluntary. When neighbors do share, a short written agreement covering location, style, height, cost split, finished side and future maintenance prevents nearly every later dispute. This isn't legal advice; consult an attorney for your situation.

What to agree on
- Exact location (consider a survey)
- Style, height and color
- Which side faces out
- Cost split and payment timing
- Gate access, if any
- Who maintains and repairs it, and how
Common splits
- 50/50 on a shared line
- One neighbor pays for an upgrade they want
- Each pays for their own side’s gates

A simple agreement template
Include:
- Names and addresses
- Fence location (attach a survey or drawing)
- Style, height, material and color
- Finished side direction
- Total cost and each share
- Payment schedule
- Who maintains and repairs
- What happens if one owner sells
Unequal shares
If one neighbor wants a more expensive style, they may pay the difference. If the fence mainly benefits one neighbor, such as for a dog or pool, that neighbor may pay more.
Contractor tips
Choose one contractor, have both neighbors sign the quote and agree in advance how changes will be handled.
