Fencing a Lot Next to a Greenway
How to keep the green view and your privacy on a lot that backs onto a greenway.

If your lot backs onto a Mecklenburg County greenway, confirm exactly where your property ends, since the greenway is public land. Expect stream buffers and floodplain mapping near the creek. Many owners choose black aluminum or black chain link to keep the view, with privacy screens only near the patio. Gates directly onto public greenway land may be restricted.

Charlotte’s greenways
Mecklenburg County has an extensive greenway network along creeks like Little Sugar, McAlpine, Mallard, Stewart and Irwin. Many neighborhoods back onto them.
Fence plan
- Locate your line (survey recommended)
- Check stream buffer and floodplain mapping
- Choose open fencing for the greenway side
- Use privacy fencing only where needed
Related: Stream buffers, Black chain link.
Common mistakes on greenway lots
- Fencing past the property line onto public land
- Clearing buffer vegetation to run a fence
- Building solid fences in floodplain areas
- Adding gates onto public land without permission
Privacy without walls
Use a mix of open fencing and landscaping. Evergreens inside the fence block views from the trail without blocking the greenway view entirely.
Wildlife
Greenways are corridors for deer, foxes and coyotes. A dig guard and self-closing gates protect pets.
Questions Charlotte homeowners ask
Can I add a gate to the greenway?
Ask Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation and check HOA rules. Private gates onto public land aren’t always allowed.
How do I get privacy from trail users?
Use evergreen plantings inside the fence and a short privacy screen near the patio rather than a solid fence along the whole line.
