Coyotes and Fences in Charlotte
Practical fence and habit changes to protect small pets from coyotes.

Coyotes are found throughout North Carolina, including Charlotte neighborhoods near greenways and woods. To protect small pets, use a solid or tight fence at least 6 feet tall, add a dig guard at the base, keep gates closed, remove food sources and supervise pets at dawn and dusk. No fence is a guarantee.

Coyotes in the city
North Carolina wildlife officials report coyotes in every county. In Charlotte, sightings are common near greenways, creeks, golf courses and wooded edges, but coyotes also travel through dense neighborhoods at night.
Who’s at risk
Small dogs and outdoor cats are most vulnerable, especially at dawn, dusk and night. Larger dogs are less likely to be targeted but can still get into conflicts.
Fence upgrades that help
- Height: 6 feet where allowed
- Smooth faces: vinyl or tight board-on-board give fewer toeholds
- Rollers: spinning bars on top that prevent climbing over
- Dig guards: wire aprons at the base
- Gates: self-closing so they’re never left open
Yard habits
Keep pet food and water inside, secure trash and compost, pick up fallen fruit and stay with small pets outside after dark. Motion lights help too.
Questions Charlotte homeowners ask
Can coyotes jump a 6-foot fence?
They can climb or jump some fences. Smooth surfaces and coyote rollers on top make it harder.
Are coyotes dangerous to people?
Attacks on people are rare. Report concerns to local wildlife authorities.
