Fencing a Sloped Yard: Stepped vs. Racked

The two ways to run a fence up a hill, and which suits your yard.

Fencing a Sloped Yard: Stepped vs. Racked in Charlotte, NC
Short answer

On a slope, a fence can be stepped (level panels that drop at each post, leaving triangular gaps) or racked (panels that follow the slope). Wood can be built either way; vinyl usually steps; aluminum and chain link rack well. Choose racked for dogs and small animals, since stepped fences leave gaps at the bottom.

Gates on hills

Gates should swing downhill or be hung to clear grade.

Charlotte’s rolling lots

The Piedmont rolls. Older neighborhoods like Wesley Heights and Beverly Woods have hilly streets and lots, and newer subdivisions have graded terraces. Even gentle slopes affect how a fence looks.

Stepped fences

Each panel is level, stepping down at posts. They look tidy and suit vinyl and many wood styles, but leave triangular gaps at the bottom on steep slopes. Fill them with a kickboard, wire or soil grading if you have small pets.

Racked fences

Panels follow the slope. Aluminum and chain link rack easily; wood can be built racked with pickets cut to follow grade. Racked fences leave fewer gaps and look smoother on long, steady slopes.

Mixed approach

On irregular ground we often combine methods: racking long gentle slopes and stepping where the grade changes sharply.

Height on slopes

Height limits still apply to each section. When stepping, the tall side of each panel must stay within the allowed height, so we lay out steps carefully.
