Charlotte’s Dog Tethering Law and Fences

Charlotte's tethering restrictions, and why a fenced yard is the simplest way to comply.

Charlotte’s Dog Tethering Law and Fences in Charlotte, NC
Short answer

Charlotte adopted dog tethering restrictions that took effect March 1, 2011, with requirements on tether length, weight, swivels and conditions. A securely fenced yard avoids tethering altogether and gives dogs room to move. Check Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control for the current ordinance.

What the 2011 rules addressed

The rules set conditions such as minimum tether length, tether weight limits relative to the dog’s weight, swivel attachments and other welfare conditions. Rules can be updated, so verify current requirements.

Fence options

Why a fence is better than a tether

Tethered dogs can tangle, overheat, lose access to water or shelter and become frustrated or defensive. A fenced yard lets a dog move, play and rest naturally.

Fence features for dog owners

  • Height suited to the dog
  • Solid fencing for dogs that bark at passersby
  • Dig guards for diggers
  • Self-closing gates
  • Shade and water inside the yard

If you rent

Ask your landlord about adding a fence or a fenced dog run. A modest black chain link run can be an affordable compromise.

Reporting concerns

If you see a dog in distress, contact Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control.

Questions Charlotte homeowners ask

Can I use a trolley line instead?

Trolley and tether systems are regulated. Check current rules before relying on one.

What fence is best for big dogs?

A 5- to 6-foot solid or tight-spaced fence with self-closing gates.
