Cleaning Pollen Off Your Fence

When Charlotte's pollen season peaks and how to wash it off every fence type safely.

Cleaning Pollen Off Your Fence in Charlotte, NC
Short answer

Charlotte's heaviest pollen, much of it pine, usually coats everything yellow-green from about March into April. Wait until it tapers off, then rinse fences with a garden hose and wash with mild soap and a soft brush. Avoid high-pressure washing on wood and vinyl. Plan staining after pollen season so you don't seal pollen into the finish.

Why Charlotte’s pollen is so visible

Charlotte has lots of pines, oaks and other trees that release pollen in spring. Pine pollen in particular coats cars, decks and fences in a yellow-green film for several weeks.

A spring fence routine

  1. Wait until pollen tapers off
  2. Rinse the whole fence
  3. Wash with mild soap and a soft brush
  4. Rinse well
  5. Inspect posts, gates and latches
  6. Note areas needing stain later

Protect plants

Use gentle cleaners, wet plants before and after, and avoid runoff into storm drains.

For wood fences

Plan staining for after pollen season so pollen isn’t sealed into the finish.

Questions Charlotte homeowners ask

Will pollen stain my fence?

It usually washes off, but combined with moisture it can feed mildew. Rinse it within a few weeks.

Can I pressure wash?

Use low pressure and a wide fan tip. High pressure can gouge wood and etch vinyl.
