Dilworth Fences

Historic-appropriate picket, iron and privacy fences for Charlotte's first streetcar suburb.

Dilworth Fences in Charlotte, NC
Short answer

Dilworth is one of Charlotte's eight local historic districts, so fences visible from the street generally need Historic District Commission approval. Approved designs usually respect the house's era: painted wood picket or simple iron in front at modest heights, and wood privacy fences placed behind the front of the house.

The neighborhood

Dilworth began in the 1890s as Charlotte’s first streetcar suburb. Today it’s a mix of Victorian, foursquare, craftsman and colonial revival homes along East Boulevard, Park Avenue, Kingston and the streets around Latta Park, with large oaks and close-set houses.

Fence considerations

  • Certificate of Appropriateness for new and replacement fences in the historic district
  • Street trees and planting strips on many blocks
  • Narrow side yards between houses
  • Alleys and rear access on some blocks
  • Corner lots with sight triangle limits

Styles that suit Dilworth

  • Painted wood pickets matched to house trim
  • Simple black iron or ornamental steel with or without brick piers
  • Board-on-board or shadowbox privacy in back
  • Arched or arbor garden gates

How we help

Questions Charlotte homeowners ask

Can I put a privacy fence in my Dilworth front yard?

Generally no. UDO front-yard height limits and historic guidelines both point to low, open front fences. Privacy fencing typically starts behind the front plane of the house.

How long does historic review take?

It depends on whether staff can approve it or it goes to the full Commission. Plan ahead and submit a complete drawing.
