Corner Lots and Sight Triangles
Why corner lots need a clear sight triangle, and how to get privacy without blocking drivers' view.

On a Charlotte corner lot, an area at the intersection called the sight triangle must stay clear of fences, walls and plantings that block drivers' view. The city sets its dimensions by code and CDOT reviews corner-lot fences as part of the Fence and Wall Certificate. Plan privacy fencing to start outside the triangle and keep low, open fencing near the corner.
Why it matters
Corners are where drivers, cyclists and pedestrians meet. A 6-foot privacy fence at the corner can hide a child on a bike until it’s too late. Sight triangles keep that zone open.
Corner lot challenges
- Two street frontages, so two sides face front-yard-type limits
- The sight triangle cuts off the corner
- More linear footage overall
- Often a CDOT certificate
Design tips
- Start full-height privacy behind the house and outside the triangle.
- Angle the fence at the corner rather than running a square corner into the triangle.
- Use open aluminum or low picket along the corner side.
- Place gates away from the intersection.
- Use landscaping beds behind the fence for softness, not hedges in the triangle.
Driveways
Driveways need visibility too. Keep fences and gates back far enough that you can see the sidewalk and street when backing out.

Questions Charlotte homeowners ask
How big is the sight triangle?
The city defines the measurement in its code and design standards, and it depends on the street and intersection type. CDOT applies it during review. We lay it out on site before designing.
Can I plant shrubs in the sight triangle?
Plantings that block visibility are also restricted. Keep anything there low.
