How Wide Should a Fence Gate Be?
Gate widths that work for carts, mowers and trailers.

A 4-foot walk gate fits people and roll-out trash carts one at a time. A 5- to 6-foot gate makes push mowers, wheelbarrows and two carts easier. Riding mowers usually need about 6 feet or a double gate. Trailers and vehicles need 10 to 12 feet or more. Wider wood gates need steel frames or anti-sag hardware.

Charlotte’s roll-out carts
Charlotte homes use large roll-out carts for trash and recycling, and many households also have yard waste carts or bins. If carts live behind the fence, every pickup day means rolling them through a gate. A 4-foot clear opening handles one cart at a time; a 5-foot or wider gate makes it easier and protects gate posts from bumps.
Measure clear width, not gate width
Hinges, latches and posts reduce the usable opening. When we say a “5-foot gate,” we plan for a clear opening that actually fits what you need to move through.
Wide gate hardware
- Steel frame or anti-sag kit on wood gates
- Heavy-duty hinges, three on tall gates
- Cane bolt or drop rod on double gates
- Larger, deeper gate posts
Where to put the gate
Put the cart gate on the side closest to the curb and garage, with a level path. Put the mower gate where the mower is stored. Avoid placing gates where water collects after rain.
Questions Charlotte homeowners ask
Why does my gate sag?
Wide wood gates are heavy. A steel frame, cable kit or larger post fixes most.
Single or double gate?
Double gates work well over about 6 feet.
