Shadowbox Fences
Alternating pickets on both sides of the rails, so the fence looks finished from your yard and your neighbor's.

A shadowbox fence alternates pickets on opposite sides of the rails. It looks the same from both sides, lets a breeze through and still blocks most direct views. In Charlotte it's a favorite on shared lot lines in older neighborhoods, where neither neighbor wants the "back" of a fence.
Why it’s popular here
- Neighbor-friendly. Both yards get the finished side. That defuses the “good side” question. See The good side of the fence.
- Airflow. In humid July, a fence that breathes keeps patios cooler and dries faster after rain.
- Wind. The gaps reduce wind load compared with solid panels.
- Looks. The depth and shadow lines suit bungalows and cottages.
Build options
- Pine or cedar pickets
- Flat top, dog-ear or capped
- Overlap amount: more overlap means more privacy
- Stained or natural
Where it works best
Side and back lines between houses in Plaza Midwood, Dilworth, Elizabeth, Chantilly, Cotswold and Sedgefield, and anywhere an HOA requires a fence to look the same from both sides.
Care
Shadowbox dries faster than solid board-on-board, which slows mildew. Staining takes a bit longer because there are more edges to coat.
Questions Charlotte homeowners ask
Is a shadowbox fence fully private?
From straight on, it blocks almost everything. At an angle you can see through the gaps. Board-on-board is better if you need full privacy.
Does shadowbox cost more?
Yes, a bit more than a basic dog-ear fence because it uses more pickets and labor.
