Board-on-Board Fences
Overlapping pickets that keep full privacy even after the wood dries and shrinks.

Board-on-board uses two layers of pickets that overlap, so there are no see-through gaps even when wood shrinks in dry weather. It's the best wood choice for full privacy in Charlotte, especially between closely spaced houses and next to new two- and three-story infill.
Why choose it
Plain privacy fences with pickets butted side by side open small gaps as wood dries. Board-on-board overlaps pickets so those gaps never appear. If your patio faces a neighbor’s deck or a new house towers over your yard, this is the wood fence to pick.
Options
- Pine for value or cedar for stability and color
- Top cap and trim board for a furniture-grade finish
- Flat top or dog-ear
- Kickboard at the bottom to keep pickets out of the soil
Weight and wind
A solid board-on-board fence catches wind like a sail. On exposed lines we may shorten post spacing, deepen posts or recommend a small gap pattern. See Wind-resistant fences.
Pairs well with
- A lower picket or aluminum fence in front
- A horizontal cedar section by the patio
- Black hardware and a steel-framed gate
Questions Charlotte homeowners ask
How is board-on-board different from shadowbox?
Both use pickets on two layers, but board-on-board overlaps them more and typically puts both layers on the same side of the rails, closing gaps completely.
Is it heavier?
Yes. It uses more lumber, so post spacing and depth matter, and gates need anti-sag hardware.
