Split Rail Fences
Rustic split rail fencing for wooded lots, property boundaries and dog yards with wire backing.

Split rail is a low, open fence of rails slotted into posts. It marks a boundary without blocking views, costs less per foot than most fences, and with welded wire on the inside it will keep most dogs in. It fits wooded lots in northwest Charlotte, Mint Hill and around Mountain Island Lake.

When to choose split rail
- Defining a boundary on a large or wooded lot
- Edging a driveway or garden
- Keeping a dog in with wire backing
- Areas where a solid fence would look out of place
Options
- Two or three rails
- Cedar or pressure-treated pine
- Black or green welded wire
- Matching walk and drive gates
Near water and buffers
Wooded lots often border creeks. Open fences like split rail are less likely to impede drainage, but buffer and easement rules still apply. See Stream buffers and fences.
Design tips
Split rail looks best following natural contours and curves rather than strict straight lines. On wooded lots, it can weave around trees without damaging roots.
Keeping dogs in
Welded wire attached to the inside of the rails keeps most dogs in. Black or green wire disappears visually.
Maintenance
Split rail needs little upkeep. Replace broken rails and check posts after storms.
Cost
Split rail is one of the most affordable fences per foot, making it good for long boundaries.
Questions Charlotte homeowners ask
Will split rail keep my dog in?
Not by itself. Add welded wire mesh on the inside for most dogs.
How long does split rail last?
Cedar and pressure-treated pine both work; pine posts rated for ground contact last longest in wet clay.
