Mixed-Width Modern Fences

Custom horizontal patterns with varied board widths and black posts for modern Charlotte homes.

Mixed-Width Modern Fences in Charlotte, NC
Short answer

A mixed-width fence alternates board widths, such as 4-, 6- and 8-inch boards, in a repeating pattern, often on black steel or aluminum posts. It's a signature look on Charlotte's modern farmhouses and infill homes, and it costs more than a uniform horizontal fence because of extra layout and cutting.

Design tips

  • Pick a repeating pattern so it reads as intentional
  • Align board breaks with windows or posts
  • Natural or light stains on black posts suit white board-and-batten homes
  • Keep gates in the same pattern

Where it fits

Modern farmhouses in newer subdivisions, infill homes in Wesley Heights, Villa Heights and Optimist Park, and remodeled ranches in Sedgefield and east Charlotte.

HOA approval

Some HOAs restrict horizontal fences. Bring a drawing with dimensions and a stain sample. See HOA fence approval in Charlotte.

Sample patterns

  • 4-6-8 repeat: three widths, repeating
  • Random-look: a long repeating sequence that reads as random
  • Banded: mostly one width with accent bands of narrow boards

Posts and framing

Black steel or aluminum posts with board channels give a slim look and keep boards straight. Wood posts can be wrapped with trim or painted black.

Stain and color

Natural cedar tones, warm browns and grays are popular. Light stains show the pattern best. Stain before installation when possible so edges get coated too.

Gates

Match the pattern on gates and use steel frames to prevent sagging.

Questions Charlotte homeowners ask

What wood works best?

Cedar is the most stable and takes stain well. Composite boards are an even more stable option.

Should the gaps vary too?

Usually the gaps stay consistent while board widths vary. That keeps the pattern clean.
