Deer Fences in Charlotte
How tall a deer fence needs to be, and options that respect Charlotte's height rules.

Deer can clear many fences, so effective deer fences are usually 7 to 8 feet tall, or two shorter fences a few feet apart. In Charlotte, an 8-foot fence is generally allowed only in an established rear yard and needs a permit over 6 feet, so many gardeners fence just the vegetable garden.

Where deer pressure is highest
Deer move along Charlotte’s creek and greenway corridors and wooded edges. Homes near McAlpine Creek, the Mountain Island area, Mint Hill and wooded parts of south and northwest Charlotte see the most browsing.
Working within height rules
Because a full 8-foot perimeter fence is generally allowed only in an established rear yard and needs a permit over 6 feet, many Charlotte gardeners fence just the vegetable garden or orchard. A compact 8-foot enclosure around raised beds is easier to approve, cheaper and protects what deer actually want.
Design ideas
- Garden enclosure: cedar frame with black welded wire, an arbor gate and a top band of deer mesh
- Double fence: two 4- to 5-foot fences about 4 to 5 feet apart; deer avoid jumping into narrow spaces
- Mesh behind ornamental fencing: a black aluminum fence with taller black mesh on posts behind it
Don’t forget
Gates need to be as tall as the fence. Deer will find a low gate. Keep the bottom tight too, because rabbits and groundhogs are a bigger problem than deer in many Charlotte gardens.
