Fence Rules Outside Charlotte City Limits
What changes when your home is in Matthews, Mint Hill, Pineville or another Mecklenburg town.

Matthews, Mint Hill and Pineville are separate towns with their own zoning ordinances, so City of Charlotte rules like UDO height limits and the CDOT Fence and Wall Certificate don't apply there. Check the town's planning and zoning office for fence height and placement rules. Building permits for qualifying fences and pools and state pool barrier rules still apply.

What to check
- Your jurisdiction (city or town)
- The town’s fence rules
- HOA guidelines
- Easements, buffers and floodplain
Towns we serve
Why jurisdiction matters
Mecklenburg County includes Charlotte and six towns: Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Matthews, Mint Hill and Pineville. Each sets its own zoning rules for things like fence height and placement. A Charlotte mailing address doesn’t always mean a property is inside Charlotte’s city limits, and some areas near town edges are surprising.
How to check your jurisdiction
Look up your parcel on the county’s Polaris GIS map, which lists the jurisdiction, or call the planning department you think applies.
What usually stays the same

We work across Mecklenburg County and check the right rules for each address.
Questions Charlotte homeowners ask
My address says Charlotte, but am I in the city?
Mailing addresses don’t always match city limits. Check your parcel’s jurisdiction on Polaris.
