When to Stain a New Pine Fence
How to tell when new pine is dry enough to stain, and the best seasons to do it in Charlotte.

New pressure-treated pine is wet from treatment and needs to dry before it will absorb stain, usually weeks to a few months in Charlotte depending on season and sun. Sprinkle water on the wood: if it soaks in, it's ready; if it beads, wait. Fall and late spring after pollen season are usually the best times to stain.

The water-drop test
Sprinkle a few drops of water on several boards in sun and shade. If the water soaks in within a few minutes, the wood is ready. If it beads up, wait and test again in a week or two. Shaded sides of a Charlotte fence often take longer to dry than sunny sides.
Choosing a stain
- Semi-transparent: shows grain, good UV protection, easy recoats
- Semi-solid: more color, hides mismatched boards
- Clear sealers: little UV protection, short lifespan in full sun
Prep matters
Clean pollen, dirt and mill glaze off new wood with a wood cleaner before staining. Protect plants, siding and hardscapes.
Don’t wait too long
Leaving new pine unstained for a year or more lets it gray, check and grow mildew, which means more cleaning before staining. Once the wood passes the water test, stain it.
Maintenance schedule
South and west faces in full sun usually need recoating sooner than shaded north faces. Walk the fence each spring after pollen season and note where color has faded.
Questions Charlotte homeowners ask
How often should I restain?
Typically every two to four years, sooner on sunny south and west faces.
Can I paint instead of stain?
Paint can peel on fences; penetrating stains are easier to maintain.
